A new upstream major release of GNOME Shell is available in
experimental, and as usual, all GNOME Shell extensions will need updates
to be compatible with the new version.
Upstream provides a migration guide here:
<https://gjs.guide/extensions/upgrading/gnome-shell-50.html>
and there is some Debian-specific documentation here:
<https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/gnome-shell/-/blob/debian/latest/debian/updating-extensions.md?ref_type=heads>
When the rest of the necessary packages are ready and the release team
gives the go-ahead to do the transition, bug reports like this one will
be raised to serious. If extensions aren't compatible with the new GNOME
Shell, they'll have to be removed from testing temporarily.
Thanks,
smcv
We'll be requesting approval from the Debian Release Team soon to do the GNOME Shell 51 transition. Therefore, I'm raising the severity of these bugs. Packages that aren't ready by the time GNOME Shell 51 is ready to migrate to Testing will be removed from Testing to complete the transition. Thank you, Jeremy Bícha
Hi Jermemy, the transition workflow asks to bump the severity to RC only after the transition has started [1] . Please respect the estabilished procedures and don't create a artifical pressure. Thanks. [1] https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/ReleaseTeam/Transitions
I think the situation here is a bit different than FTBFS bugs which are the most common type of transition blocker bug. If these extensions are not either fixed or removed from Testing, it is impossible for gnome-shell to migrate to Testing. Waiting until the new gnome-shell version is in unstable has 2 side effects: - Debian reports that the package will be automatically removed, but the date is wrong; the actual removal will happen manually much sooner. - The Release Team needs to manually remove any packages that aren't either fixed or auto-removed already, so that's extra work for them. You're the only person who has complained when I've done this. I expect that I'll file the transition bug Monday morning; it's a simpler transition than some in the past so I expect approval may be quick. I think it could be less work for everyone if you updated your package instead of complaining about the bug severity. I'm sorry that you feel stress from the RC bug. My intent is to send a friendly reminder to extension maintainers to update their packages to avoid removal from Testing. Thank you, Jeremy Bícha
GNOME Shell 51 was uploaded to Unstable today. It looks like version 127 of this extension was recently tagged and claims to support GNOME Shell 51. Thank you, Jeremy Bícha
