less 668 polls /dev/tty during pipe reads via check_poll(), which causes
`less -F` (used by default in git, jj, etc.) to read and discard terminal
typeahead via getchr() + ungetcc_back() whenever input arrives across
multiple pipe reads and exits after less than one screen:
