Dear Maintainer,

# * What led up to the situation?
I upgraded to the kernel 6.12.111 on my desktop computer. After the upgrade, bluetooth no longer worked.
# * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
# ineffective)?

I rebooted the computer and selected the old kernel, 6.12.107, from the boot menu. After booting the old kernel, bluetooth worked again.
# * What outcome did you expect instead?

I would expect bluetooth to work with the current kernel.

Hi Erik

Yes understandable. It would be great if you could bisect the problem. That would involve
compiling and testing a few kernels

    git clone --single-branch -b linux-6.12.y https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git
    cd linux-stable
    git checkout v6.12.107
    cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) .config
    yes '' | make localmodconfig
    make savedefconfig
    mv defconfig arch/x86/configs/my_defconfig

    # test 6.12.107 to ensure this is "good"
    make my_defconfig
    make -j $(nproc) bindeb-pkg
... install the resulting .deb package and confirm problem does not exist

    # test 6.12.111 to ensure this is "bad"
    git checkout v6.12.111
    make my_defconfig
    make -j $(nproc) bindeb-pkg
... install the resulting .deb package and confirm problem exists

With that confirmed, the bisection can start:

    git bisect start
    git bisect good v6.12.107
    git bisect bad v6.12.111

In each bisection step git checks out a state between the oldest
known-bad and the newest known-good commit. In each step test using:

    make my_defconfig
    make -j $(nproc) bindeb-pkg
... install, verify if problem exists

and if the problem is hit run:

    git bisect bad

and if the problem doesn't trigger run:

    git bisect good

. Please pay attention to always select the just built kernel for
booting, it won't always be the default kernel picked up by grub.

Iterate until git announces to have identified the first bad commit.

Then provide the output of

    git bisect log

In the course of the bisection you might have to uninstall previous
kernels again to not exhaust the disk space in /boot. Also in the end
uninstall all self-built kernels again.

Regards,
Salvatore

.

Upstrema has queued 4a23ce935f74 ("Bluetooth: btrtl: Add the support
for RTL8761CUV") for the next 6.12.y, can you verify in advance if
that fixes your issue and pick the patch on top?

Hi Erik,

Apologies, this is my error. The mentioned commit 4a23ce935f74 *is*
already part of 6.12.111 upstream, so we have here a different issue
to report upstream caused by the
f05baf6e0680d8c10d2fbbc5953848fc3e3db957 commit.

I'm looping in Ben, who said yesterday in the kernel-team meeting to
look into this issue as well.

but I think we should bring this new problem to upstream regressions
list as wel.

Salvatore

Hi

In Debian Erik Brangs reported that after the update from 6.12.107 to
6.12.111, specifically with the backport of 980084de4d9b ("Bluetooth:
btusb: Add ASUS USB-BT540 for Realtek 8761CU") Bluetooth is not
anymore working, the full report is found at
https://bugs.debian.org/1149377 .

the device now requests rtl_bt/rtl8761cu_fw.bin firwmare (assumtion the device
had previously working firwmare but with adding support for ASUS USB-BT540 for
Realtek 8761CU, tries to load the not avaialble firmware and get not
functional? I'm looping in Ben Hutchings which has much more experience on that
on our end.

#regzbot link: https://bugs.debian.org/1149377

Maybe the answer is simply here, Debian needs to provide the firmware from now
on in the firmware-realtek in stable?

rtl_bt/rtl8761cu_fw.bin has been in linux-firmware only since 20251111,
and Debian trixie's firmware-realtek 20250410-2 does not have it.

Marcel, Luiz: could you, or Christoph Zwerschke as the author of the ID
commit, send an upstream revert, or a fallback to ROM firmware when
rtl8761cu_fw.bin is missing? Stable will take it for 7.2, 6.18 and 6.12
through the normal Cc: stable route once it is in mainline.

Anyone working on this?

If not: Should we revert 980084de4d9b and its backports? Or only the
backports to older stable series?

Strictly speaking it should be the former due to our policies wrt to
firmware -- but I guess most users of a more recent kernels also have a
newer firmware, so I wonder if reverting the change might do more harm
then good now.

Ciao Thorsten,

Thanks for looking into this regression as well.

If my understanding is correct from a earlier fixed regression in the
ariea, aka
https://lore.kernel.org/regressions/0fd8c1c9-7f56-4bcb-a727-e4386d8ef094@online.de/
should then not only 980084de4d9b ("Bluetooth: btusb: Add ASUS
USB-BT540 for Realtek 8761CU") be reverted, but as well along
6f0624b4427e ("Bluetooth: btusb: Add ASUS USB-BT600 for Realtek
8761CU") and as well 4a23ce935f74 ("Bluetooth: btrtl: Add the support
for RTL8761CUV")?

Maybe, I didn't look closer, but that's why reverting in mainline likely
really is a bad idea: it might cause a regression for users that depend
on those changes (one of which is from 6.19).

So I guess reverting some or all of those backports in "older stable
series", as Sasha suggested, might be the best -- but I guess it would
be good if someone with more knowledge in this area could provide an
opinion.
