An important point: this happens only when the *right* border of the
window that is moved is near the concerned column.

To trigger the bug, the best is to move the window leftward and slowly

(i.e. just after these characters are fully visible), they suddenly
disappear completely.

I've tried again with 16x48 and 80x16 xterms, and the same issue

I've also tried with FVWM2's and FVWM3's default config.
  * With the xterm started from FVWM's menu, I cannot reproduce the
    issue, but the xterm has a thick scrollbar on the right, so the
    scrollbar appears where the last columns would have been, and
    this would explain why the issue does not occur.
  * With the xterm started from this xterm, it is $COLUMNS-2 that is
    affected. The font is
      -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1
    but what is also probably important is that the xterm has a
    thick scrollbar on the left.

Have you tried with FVWM?

I think that this is related to the width of the font and the scrollbar
related properties: presence or position (left or right) and its width.

I suppose that glyphs=0x03 corresponds to the space (no glyphs).
So xterm requests to clear the column at x=869.

I can also reproduce the issue with the Sawfish window manager.

FYI, one can fill the screen with standard commands, e.g.

  tr -cd 0-z < /dev/random | head -c 20000

(or with some other arbitrary big file instead of /dev/random).

I narrowed it down to changes in screen.c, where I was fixing a problem
with SL (scroll-left).  It looks as if I didn't account for the window
border width in a comparison.
