Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the package "scala", a team package of the
Debian Java Maintainers.

 * Package name     : scala
   Version          : 2.12.21+ds3-1
   Upstream contact : Scala team <scala-internals@googlegroups.com>
 * URL              : https://www.scala-lang.org
 * License          : Apache-2.0, BSD-3-clause
 * Vcs              : https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/scala
   Section          : devel

The source builds the following binary packages:

  scala - compiler and tools for the Scala programming language
  scala-library - Scala standard library

The package is on the branch bump-2.12 of
https://salsa.debian.org/mendezr/scala, as merge request
https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/scala/-/merge_requests/2

Changes since the last upload:

 * Scala 2.11.12 to 2.12.21, built without sbt by a two-pass
   self-hosting build. 2.11 is retired (scala-asm 9.x is already in
   unstable).
 * Fixes the migration problem of https://bugs.debian.org/1142168 (scala
   and scala-asm leave testing on 2026-10-26 otherwise).
 * No prebuilt binary in the source. Scala 2.12 can only be compiled by a
   Scala 2.12 compiler, so the first upload is built once with the
   pkg.scala.stage0 profile from upstream's own pinned STARR (2.12.21-M2);
   debian/README.source gives provenance, checksums and the recipe.
   Later uploads are source-only and self-host from the archive. The
   package is not NEW.

Reverse dependencies, ready as merge requests:
https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/plm/-/merge_requests/4
https://salsa.debian.org/med-team/pilon/-/merge_requests/1
https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/latexdraw/-/merge_requests/3

Tested: sbuild with the stage0 and the normal profile (two normal builds
give identical .debs), autopkgtest, lintian --pedantic, and ratt on the
14 reverse build-dependencies.

Juan Manuel Méndez Rey

Hi,

A short reminder, since there is now a date: scala and scala-asm will be
removed from testing on 2026-11-01, and with them pilon, json4s, scopt
and htsjdk with its users (picard-tools, fastqc, snpeff, artemis and
others), see https://udd.debian.org/cgi-bin/autoremovals.cgi. htsjdk can
leave that list on its own: 5.0.0+dfsg-2 drops the scala-library build
dependency and can be uploaded now that gradle 4.6-3 is in unstable
(https://salsa.debian.org/med-team/htsjdk/-/merge_requests/1).

The cause is https://bugs.debian.org/1142168. scala-asm 9.9.0 is a
migration candidate and passes every policy, but britney skips it with
"scala-faux-build-depends": it Breaks scala (<< 2.12), so the build
dependencies of scala 2.11 become uninstallable in testing. Uploading
scala 2.12 is the only clean fix. The package has no new binaries, so it
does not go through NEW.

It is ready for review in
https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/scala/-/merge_requests/2 (self-hosting
build without sbt, two builds byte-identical, autopkgtest, and ratt on the
14 reverse build dependencies). The reverse dependencies are ready too:
the latexdraw MR is approved by its uploader
(https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/latexdraw/-/merge_requests/3), and the
plm and pilon MRs wait only for scala. The whole chain (2.12, 2.13, 3)
was rebuilt in upload order from a clean sid; the order and how to build
each package are in
https://salsa.debian.org/mendezr/scala/-/wikis/Upload-order

Scala 2.12 is also the first step of a longer plan. I am writing dh-scala
(https://salsa.debian.org/mendezr/dh-scala), a debhelper build system for
Scala libraries without sbt, plus a generator that starts a package from its
Maven Central POM. It already builds scala-xml-2.12 and
scala-parser-combinators-2.12 with classes byte-identical to their
hand-written builds, and libraries for Scala 2.13 and 3 too. Nothing to
review there yet: scala 2.12 comes first.

Thanks,
Juan
