   apt update; apt upgrade; installed new ketenl 7.2 which broke the
   sound.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
options snd_soc_sof_sdw quirk=65535

in kernel line added snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=3


   * What was the outcome of this action?

   did not fix the sound in 7.2 kernels.
   * What outcome did you expect instea?

   I wanted the sound to work.

The sound works fine in all 7.1 kernels, but does not in any 7.2 kernels.
