The installation process of Debian Edu 13.7.0
(‘debian-edu-13.7.0-amd64-BD-1.iso’) in graphical and text modes, with
"Main + Workstation + LTSP Server" stops with errors in logs:
mkinitramfs: unsupported MODULES setting: debian-edu-install-udeb.
mkinitramfs: Falling back to MODULES=most.
The installation stops at this status:
```
Finishing the installation
41%
Running debian-edu-profile-udeb...
```
... and no more records are produced on the installation log console (TTY4).
The last lines in the console:
```
Last 12 quoted lines were generated by promiser
'/usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/install-task-pkgs'
Completed execution of
'/usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/install-task-pkgs'
Executing 'no timeout' ...
'/usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/improve-desktop-i10n'
```
The last lines of /var/log/installer/cfengine-edu-install.log:
```
verbose: Promiser string contains a valid executable
'/usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/improve-desktop-l10n' - ok
info: Executing 'no timeout' ...
'/usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/improve-desktop-l10n'
verbose: Setting umask to 77
```
PS and PSTree show that it probably hangs on
/usr/lib/finish-install.d/13debian-edu-profile-udeb.
Can be checked in the installation log console TTY4 (Ctrl+Alt+4)
and in TTY2 (Ctrl+Alt+2) with commands:
`chroot /target`
`grep mkinit /var/log/ -R`
`tail -10 /var/log/installer/cfengine-edu-install.log`

I know that for live images an additional udeb is used, and IIRC that it is not mentioned in the kernel command line with modules=XXX -> to be commented in the new bug number. For issue 2 there is a work-around: https://salsa.debian.org/debian-edu/debian-edu-install/-/merge_requests/13 and it additionally needs another fix https://salsa.debian.org/debian-edu/debian-edu-config/-/merge_requests/68 to let the LTSP script run without errors. I've reduced the severity of this ticket, see https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities Issue 2 does not affect the netinst-based installation, only the offline installation and also not all profiles. I'm preparing a fix for the debian-edu-config package which addresses these issues. My strategy: use the BD image, allow it to access trixie-proposed-updates and versions of debian-edu-config and debian-edu-install freshly-built from git. With kind regards, Roland Clobus

Hi,
The live images activate the live-installer udeb in `scripts/build/binary_disk` with:
```
if [ "${LB_DEBIAN_INSTALLER}" = "live" ]
then
echo "live-installer" >> binary/.disk/udeb_include
fi
```
In https://salsa.debian.org/images-team/setup this could be configured in the edu.cfg file.
Currently the `modules=debian-edu-install-udeb` part is configured here, but there could be a specific udeb_include file instead.
With kind regards,
Roland

Hi Roland, This sounds good to me. Please proceed with that approach. My understanding is that this will continue including debian-edu-install-udeb and avoid the update-initramfs error message regarding modules= on the kernel cmdline, correct? Mike

Ok, I'll locally build some images and then contact the debian-cd team. Indeed, the 'modules=' part of the kernel command line is used by update-initramfs (as well as d-i) and if the udeb_include strategy works as intended, these error messages will disappear from the logs.
