* Package name : gnome-shell-extension-clipdeck Version : 1.0.0 Upstream Contact: Subhadip Jana <subhadipjana@jdtensor.com> * URL : https://github.com/JD-Tensor/clipdeck * License : GPL-2+ Programming Lang: JavaScript Description : clipboard history in the GNOME Shell top bar Clipdeck adds a clipboard icon to the GNOME Shell top bar. Clicking it shows a history of everything recently copied or cut: text, links, images, screenshots and files (including videos, shown with thumbnails). Choosing an item puts it back on the clipboard and pastes it into the focused window. The history can be searched, and items can be pinned or removed. Compared with GPaste, which is already in Debian, Clipdeck keeps images and copied files in its history with thumbnails, and needs no separate daemon or configuration. I am the upstream author and will maintain the package; I am looking for a sponsor.

The last one that caught my attention was the very popular https://github.com/boerdereinar/copyous which depends indirectly on https://github.com/gjsify/ts-for-gir, which is something we are going to need in Debian Gnome, but it requires quite some work before we get there. In comparison, your package isn't popular, is plain javascript code, has almost no deps (both are not showstoppers). It looks like it's using event keys to simulate user input (ctrl-v to paste, and keyboard events to type characters): that's too much of a hack to me. Also I'm concerned that it seems you are directly targeting Debian: there is no clipdeck extension on https://extensions.gnome.org/ ? In my experience, software without a user base is a bad candidate to be a Debian package. Last time I indulged a motivated developer (a good one, it was one of the creators of zig), he abandoned everything he managed to get uploaded. A good formation for him, a lot of time wasted for me and for Debian. I hope you understand the comparison. Jérémy
Hi Jérémy, Thank you for taking the time to look at it, and for the candid feedback. You are right that the package has no user base yet, and I understand the concern about maintainers who disappear after the first upload. I'll take the usual route: publish Clipdeck on extensions.gnome.org first, maintain it there, and only come back to Debian once it has real users and a track record. On paste simulation, one clarification: Clipdeck never types characters. When an item is chosen it puts it back on the clipboard and, optionally, sends a single Ctrl+V (Ctrl+Shift+V in terminals). I agree that is still a workaround, so the next release makes it opt-in: by default, choosing an item will only copy it. Thanks also for the pointer to copyous and ts-for-gir; I'll follow that work. Best regards,
