Hi,

I noticed that speech-dispatcher doesn't log anymore into
/var/log/speech-dispatcher but into /run/user/$uid/speech-dispatcher/log.

In my case, on my otherwise default trixie gnome-desktop (default gnome
tasksel selection), /run is 6MB of which 4MB(!) are from
/run/user/$uid/speech-dispatcher/log

Can you please move these logs out of /run, as this will fill out the
ramdisk at some point and isn't suitable for smaller systems?

Regards,
Daniel

Yes, because speech-dispatcher is now run by the user.

6MB is actually extremely small for /run

Instead it would fill the disk long-term, since logrotate cannot rotate
user logs...

Perhaps we should rather reduce the default loglevel to 2, so it does
not log utterances etc.

Hi Samuel,

this is after 5 days of running.

now it fills ram, I'd consider disk less severe.
right, in general that sounds like something we should have :)

that would be nice. especially since I'm not using it at all and it is
installed by default because it's part of the gnome-desktop tasksel
selection (so I wasn't even ware that it's there, as I haven't installed
it manually/on purpose).

But /run gets flushed at reboot.

It's really not clear to me that logrotate should be touching people's
home...

If you are not using it at all, then the log will not be growing at all.

I'm however wondering why it's running, it doesn't autostart by itself,
only if some program did emit some utterance. The log itself will tell
you what client did try to connect.

if you reboot, yes.

I'm not using it at all, yet it's 4MB and keeps growing.

it seems it's started because of ibus.

but whatever, I've patched meta-gnome3 locally now so gnome-core doesn't
depend on orca (which pulls in speech-dispatcher) and purged it from my
system, RIP.

fun fact: when you purge it, the current running processes do not get
stopped, they keep running in the background (defunct). :/

It's not supposed to grow if it's not being used at all.

Again, looking at the log would tell why it's growing.

Uh? What does it do with speech-dispatcher?

That will solve the issue only on your system.
