Description : Python SDK for Model Context Protocol servers and
clients
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that lets AI
applications connect to external tools, data sources, and prompts
through a
uniform JSON-RPC interface. This package provides the official Python
SDK,
with client and server implementations, stdio and streamable HTTP
transports,
and the high-level FastMCP decorator API.
The same upstream source also produces the mcp-types distribution, which
contains the protocol's wire types. I plan to build both python3-mcp and
python3-mcp-types from this source package.
Apart from that companion package, all runtime dependencies are already in
the archive: python3-anyio, python3-httpx2, python3-jsonschema,
python3-opentelemetry-api, python3-pydantic, python3-jwt,
python3-python-multipart, python3-sse-starlette, python3-starlette,
python3-typing-extensions, python3-typing-inspection, and python3-uvicorn.
The optional "cli" extra needs python3-dotenv, python3-typer, and
python3-rich, which are also available.
I intend to maintain this package within the Debian Python Team, in
https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/packages/python-mcp, following
the team
policy and shipping an autopkgtest. The immediate motivation is
debian-bts-mcp, an MCP server for the Debian Bug Tracking System that
would
otherwise have to vendor or reimplement the protocol layer.
Packaging the SDK would also let other MCP clients and servers enter
Debian
without bundling their own copy of it.
