The FHS states:
"To restore a system, those utilities needed to restore from system
backups (on floppy, tape, etc.) must be present on the root
	filesystem."

Doesn't that mean that amrecover (and any friends it has) must be on the
root file system?

You could certainly make that argument. However, since Amanda is mostly a
wrapper around tools like tar and dump, you can equally validly assert that
those need to be on the root filesystem but not the higher-level convenience
utilities that are part of Amanda.

I'm not personally fond of root bloat, ergo the current choices. I'll leave
this bug open but downgrade it to wishlist priority.

I think you've forgotten what the 'N' stands for. Without the amanda tools,
as far as I know, there is no way I can (with reasonable effort) perform a
network restore. I can't even use a combination of dd and ftp to move the
archive local, because ftp is in /usr/bin as well. (And wget. And telnet.
And lynx. And nc. Etc.)

The only tape drive happens to be on another machine, so I have to rely on
amrecover talking to the index and tape servers to restore anything.

[ BTW: Amanda's reliance on tar is definitely one of its best assets, IMO ]

Fair enough. I'll look into this over the weekend.
