  is-it possible to put the font files under a similar directory
  then the ones in gsfonts package such as /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts-other
  and not in /usr/share/ghostscript/fonts ?

From the packages viewpoint that would be a minor change. But I am not sure
about the semantics of /usr/share/fonts/type1 - should only type1 fonts go in
there? Some fonts in gsfonts-other are of category type3 or
gsfontderivative - I am not sure if those should go into that
directory.
