The Hershey fonts (e. g. hrscs.pfa) have an empty /FontBBox. Isn't that an error?
After doing an 'apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade', fs-cache seg faults when
looking in /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/H. If one removes the Hershey-*.pfa
fonts, then the command executes fine:
HOME=/root fc-cache -f -v
I thought this might be related....
Interesting. If I only had an idea about defoma. Which reminds me I wanted to contact the new maintainer :) Angus, can you help me out with this? Greetings Torsten

You'd need to get a coredump and compare with fontconfig/freetype source code to see whats going wrong. You will probably want to confer with the fontconfig maintainer, Josselin Mouette. Defoma shouldn't affect this at all, a simple fc-cache -f -v /directory/containing/Hershey-fonts/ should be able to reproduce the segfault.
All 9 Hershey fonts are read fine now.
