Currently the /debian/doc directory does _not_ provide the content which
is readily available in the web site. This includes:

- translations
- new DDP manuals or manuals which are not provided (yet) in packages

This directory is generated by 'byhand' installation of files from
documentation packages. Since the sources (for most packages) are
available in the DDP CVS the FTP team should provide means for the DDP
group to publish documentation directly to this area (as it's done for the
website).

Due to these issues, official CD images do _not_ provide content useful
for non-English speakers in the /doc directory. So we have the (other)
issue of providing i18n installation but no i18n documents for users to
browse before installing the system if they do not have an Internet
connection.

Proposed layouts are available at:
http://people.debian.org/~barbier/doc-debian-intro/ (Provides only layout
to generic information of the Debian project and translations)
and
http://auric.debian.org/~jfs/proposed-layout/ (Provides both a layout for
generic information and DDP manuals)

Proposed index (should be merged with a proper layout)
http://people.debian.org/~barbier/doc-debian-intro/ (for generic stuff)
http://www.debian.org/doc/ddp (for DDP manuals)

[probably a merge of both of them would be best, this is an ongoing effort
by the DDP group)

Current draft (unfinished) by the DDP group for this issue:

(comments welcome, pending suggestions from ftp masters)

Hi

is there still interest for something here?
Of course the links in this bug are useless now, a good example why one
would want to put all info in a bug report. So if there is still
interest, please describe what you want.

Yes, there is still interest. Please wait a little bit until I can provide a
new layout proposal.

It is also a good example of why bug reports should be answered in a timely
fashion and not over 6 years afterwards :)

One of the links (the DDP draft) is still useful, however, as well as the
links to the debian-doc mailing list discussion.
