Setting the volume and balance in aumix does not commute.
For example, starting from this configuration:

| aumix  +++++++++++L+++O++R+++++++ Vol           >+++++++++++++++++O++++++++

decreasing the volume leads to:

| aumix  +L+OR+++++++++++++++++++++<Vol           >+++++++++++++++++++++O++++

Note the change in the balance!  Increasing the volume again to the original setting gives:

| aumix  L+++++++++++O++++++++++++R<Vol           >+++++++++++++++++++++++++O

Which makes no sense.

Changing the volume should of course have no effect on the balance.
