Package: mpack Version: 1.6-1 Severity: minor File: /usr/bin/munpack Nowadays I always get this message $ munpack big_wei_picture tempdesc.txt: File exists DSC00542.JPG (image/pjpeg) even though there seems to be no tempdesc.txt file anywhere I looked.
I also get this problem with 1.6.1 (while 1.5 works ok). Not always, but here's a reproducible test case. (I trimmed the message contents for privacy reasons, hope I didn't break the MIME structure in the process, but the bogus error is the same.) According to strace, mpack tries to create (with O_EXCL) tempdesc.txt twice, so the second one fails. Frank
Hi, I've just encountered this; for emails that have >1 text part. I suspect that's triggering this misbehaviour. Regards, Matthew
(1) In dealing with Thunderbird-produced eml files that contain
multiple attachments, you encounter the following problems:
(a) Each attempt fails because tempdesc.txt already exists (a
"sudo find / -type f -name "tempdesc.txt" proves it doesn't, not anywhere).
(b) Thunderbird uses exactly the same name for each attachment,
which is "Attached Message". You can't do a bulk unpack, since the
attachments will just overwrite each other. Mozilla now has a bug
report on this. I see that munoack should append double digits to the
unacked name, but double digitd might not be enough if a lot of files
get moved this way.
(c) Mpack and munpack do not recognize the "--help" option. In
failing to do so,they still give some indication about options, but do
not explain them. Fortunately there is a man page for mpack and
munpack, so if the user knows about man, they can get some answers.
This has been flagged as a minor' problem. I disagree. As matters
stand, munpack will not do its job at all. That problem with
tempdesc.txt won't let it.
Regards.
