I've got a problem with my Debian Sid system. I left it alone for all
the summer, then I came back and apt-get-dist-upgraded it with hundreds
of megabytes of fresh debs. After that, many (GUI) programs crash during
the very first stages of their start-up.
Particular case: xMule, or aMule. Look:
----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<
I downloaded and compiled the source code with "apt-get --compile source
amule", then tried to debug it with kdbg but it didn't work for me (it
began skipping source code lines, it deserves another bug report by
itself ;-) so I did an "apt-get install ddd".
The first time ddd started up fine, and it helped me to find the calls
failing in amule (something to do with wxWindows initialisation). But
then I decided to configure the fonts in ddd, and changed the default
"helvetica-???" (sorry, can't remember the complete original names) to
"arial", and the default "lucida-???" to "couriernew" (I use the
msttcorefonts package, so I was -naively- hoping that everything would
automagically work O:-). After that, ddd began crashing like the other
programs! Look:
Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
Value in failed request: 0x2000024
Serial number of failed request: 173
Current serial number in output stream: 174
Internal error (Segmentation fault).

It asks me to report the bug, so I'm doing it, but I understand that my
problem is broader, not just ddd-specific. The "major opcode 45" issue
seems to have something to do with fonts, and it appears in all these
crashes.
Interesting fact: all those programs work _fine_ when I run them on the
"gui-broken" machine, but remotely from other machines via SSH with
X11Forwarding on. It must be something related with the libraries which
actually draw things on screen. XFree and fonts issue, maybe? But I'm
running KDE, Konqueror, Konsole and Mozilla flawless, with great
antialiased fonts!
You'll probably see that I'm running linux 2.6.0-test8. It doesn't
matter, it failed with 2.4.22-xfs as well.
