If both ttf-bitstream-vera and msttcorefonts are installed, then
{sans-serif,serif,monospace} --> {Arial,TimesNewRoman,CourierNew}.

Mozilla will use the Microsoft fonts, and it looks better with the
Bitstream fonts. Also, the Free Bitstream fonts should be preferred in
all cases unless the Microsoft fonts have been explicitly requested.

It appears that if you move the Bitstream alias entries after the
corresponding Microsoft alias entries, then Bitstream will be preferred.

A patch to fonts.conf is attached.

I won't change that unless you convince upstream (or enough people on
e.g. debian-gtk-gnome) to do so. Upstream seems to consider that if you
installed non-free Microsoft fonts, you want them to be used.

I personally don't have an opinion about that, I just don't install
these fonts.

I'm of the same opinion as you -- until OO 1.1 came out, and now you
can't manage fonts via oopadmin. The only place it is necessary to use
Microsoft fonts in OO, if you hand a Windows user a file using Bitstream
fonts the mapping will look ugly.

Now with OO you have to register them with all of defoma, apparently.
You used to just be able to make them private to OO. Well, anyway, I'll
just add the patch to my own scripts.

However, I'll take a stab at convincing Upstream that here is an
instance of someone who has installed the Microsoft fonts and doesn't
want them used.
