It would be great if mairix would let me do hardlinks rather than
symlinks. Then I could delete the main directory after processing
and have a wonderfully sorted hierarchy.

Let me understand this - the user seems to want to create multiple mfolders
based on different searches, then delete the original tree.

What happens about messages that haven't matched any of the search
criteria? They will get deleted when the original tree is deleted. Is
that what's wanted? (This isn't mairix's issue directly, since it won't
be doing the removing.)

Since it would be hard links that are being used, there isn't any
storage overhead in leaving the main tree behind, apart from the
directories in that tree themselves.

Having said that, there is no problem with adding an option to create
hardlinks rather than symlinks. In fact, that's what I was going to do
originally (perhaps some of the very early versions, long before the
first public release, actually did that, I forget now.) The main reason
that I avoided it was that with symlinks, it was much easier to find out
where the original messages were. This has now been superceded somewhat
by the raw output mode anyway.

Does the hard v sym link option need to be
- in the mairixrc file
- on the command line
- or both

?

Cheers
Richard

Hello,

here's another possible use for hardlinks: I receive a lot of mail, so
at some point I need to archive old messages, and I run archivemail that
moves old messages away in a compressed mailbox.

I have different archival policies for every different mail folder.
Most probably, I would like some relevant mairix folders to live longer
than the folders they reference. If I do symlinks, when old mail gets
archived I'm left with dangling symlinks. If they were hardlinks
instead, then they would keep surviving.

This approach would be much better than keeping the search results in
mboxes (which works, because it forces copying), because it would save
much space.

Ciao,

Enrico

Greetings.

I'm writing to you because I have a humanitarian request that I believe
could be incredibly impactful. I'm reaching out about the recent
devastating storm that tragically claimed many lives and affected numerous
individuals in Libya, including one of my clients. I would like to discuss
a proposal with you that could enable us to extend a helping hand to these
victims.

Looking forward to discussing this further with you.

Warm regards,
Mrs. Nathalie Herolds
