By default, tar should stop processing when it runs out of space.
Instead, it continues, often issuing spurious error messages:
tar: linux-2.6.5/net/core/scm.c: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: linux-2.6.5/net/core/dv.c: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: linux-2.6.5/net/core/netfilter.c: Cannot open: No such fi

These arose because some time before, it filled my disk.
