For linked PDF files, xpdf does not display national characters (russian in my case) in the content menu at left.
Adobe AcrobatReader does not have this problem and shows all characters as expected.

In my case PDF files are created with teTeX's `pdflatex' program using `hyperref' package with the following options:
\usepackage[colorlinks=true,unicode=true]{hyperref}

I can provide a particular PDF file if necessary.
