I have a line like the followin in my passwd file:

+www:::::/var/www:/bin/bash

In compat mode this makes the NIS user www availlable on this
machine. John complains about an to easy password and tries to send
mail to the user +www which bounces, because the user +www does not
exist.

sorry for the late reply, but I'm john's maintainer since Apr 23, 2008, thus
wasn't able to respond in 2005 :)

Could you please verify whether this happens with 1.7.2 (the version currently
in Debian/unstable)?
