I used lynx to go to lists.debian.org | user lists | kde | Nov 2005 This got me the first page of the lists for November; the top line indicated there were 4 pages. However, the navigation links at the top and bottom of the list to get to the other pages didn't work. Previous page and next page were not active (in the case of previous page that's not surprising). Links shows as "|<" and ">|" where active, as were first and last page. However, every link I tried (using right arrow) left me (or moved me back to) the first page. This is actually pretty serious, because I can't see the later entries. I'm trying to see if someone had a problem similar to mine (which is preventing me from using a graphical browser....). I know there are other search options, and maybe if I were clever I could figure out the URL to get to the next page.... I haven't noticed this problem with firefox. I suppose there's an outside chance this is a problem with the way lists.debian.org is showing the pages. If that turns out to be the case, please reassign appropriately. This is probably an example of some more general problem, but since I don't know what, I'm letting you know the specific difficulty. Thanks.
lynx is counting 4 pages of display. But that's not the same as a webpage. The navigation links on this page are using a different count - they're referring to different webpages rather than pages of display. It's easy to see this by viewing the page's html (by pressing a backslash in lynx to toggle source-view). The links that show up in lynx like this: |< [first page] < [previous page] Page 1 of 1 > [next page] >| [last page] all point to "threads.html", which is the page you're looking at.
Thank you for the information. So this report was based on my misunderstanding, and I think it would be OK to close. However, it might be possible to change things so this misunderstanding is less likely. Perhaps the header could say "Screen 1 of 4" or something like that. But there may be other web sites that refer, on the web site, to different screens, so I'm not sure that would be an advance over the current setup. If you think some clarification is possible and desirable, you might leave this a wishlist or low priority item. Ross
right - screens and pages are often used interchangeably. Even "document" can have different meanings according to context. I'll think about it and see if some better wording comes to mind (nothing at the moment).
It might be a matter of the display rather than the words, though no great ideas come immediately to mind. On the words, which currently are like (p2 of 6), maybe say (lynx screen 2 of 6). I think that would be clearer, except perhaps when visiting the lynx site or the lynx help :) Ross
Hello, FWIW lynx-cur 2.8.7dev9-1.2 still uses the same wording, saying "debian-kde Nov 2005 by thread (p1 of 5)" in the title page. cu andreas
