When a transfer over SSH to a machine that requires a password to be entered (which must be the case in general, but may exclude a few cases using keys) is initiated or simulated, grsync fails if ssh-askpass is not installed, printing something like ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/bin/ssh-askpass): No such file or direct... 3 more times Permission denied, please try again. Some repetition Permission denied (publickey,password,keyboard-interactie). rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far... rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io... This is not really cryptic, but it would be better to clearly indicate that the operation is impossible without the ssh-askpass package installed. ssh-askpass is suggested through rsync->ssh->openssh-client, so I wouldn't expect many to have installed it.

reopen 356995 severity 356995 minor thanks 0.5.2-1 didn't fix this bug, only reduced the chances that it occurs.
Hi Philippe, Can you tell me if you are able to reproduce this bug it the latest version of grsync? Thanks. Regards, Martijn van Brummelen
Hi Martin, sorry for the late reply, this went to an old address. My new address is this one. I am able to reproduce this bug if I uninstall ssh-askpass. BTW, I believe this report is wrongfully tagged upstream. Unless the upstream documentation suggests grsync doesn't depend on ssh-askpass, this is a Debian packaging issue (although it would be possible to fix this upstream).
Hi Philippe, Grsync doesn't rely on ssh-askpass, it does recommend ssh-askpass but it doesn't need it to function properly. So installing or removing is a user option. Regards, Martijn van Brummelen
