My father who I set up with Thunderbird on Windows expressed interest in
using Debian. So, I set him up, and to surprise him I (tried to) set up
mozilla-thunderbird just the way he likes it.

But some problems:

1. Dad had an 'Imported from Outlook Express' address book in Windows
   Thunderbird. There is no easy way to import an actual MAB file. I had
   to replace one of the pre-programmed address book files with it. Or I
   could mess with parts of prefs.js that I should never need to know
   about.

   Note that Windows' Thunderbird can import from WAB so there is no
   reason why the OS barrier should prevent Thunderbird on Linux from
   importing just as easily. (unless it uses a special WAB DLL or
   something. I doubt it.)

2. Windows' Thunderbird had the ability to import mail from a variety of
   sources, such as Eudora and Outlook Express. I was interested in
   importing from Outlook but only saw the ability to import from
   Communicator 4.x.

   Likewise, there is no good way to import from a separate profile on a
   different partition!

Once this happens it will make transitions for Thunderbird/Windows users
easier than ever before.

I'm not sending this to Bugzilla because I figure that enabling this is
but a configure option...

Mozilla Thunderbird is quiet popular and thus has lots of bugs open.
Verifying one by one with each release on my own would be a really
hard task, so I heavily depend on the testing and quality feedback
of the package users.

As you might have noticed Thunderbird 0.9 has been released about a
week ago. Finally I have uploaded a package for that version to my
preview and backports repository. The apt lines can be found at [1].

In addition to testing the upgrade path I ask you for help to verify
if your bug is still present. So please take a minute or two and
install the preview package to look if everything is fine and if your
bug is still present. The preview package is currently build for
sarge, so if you encounter any problems installing them in unstable,
let me know! I might build another version for the current sid too!

And remember, please drop a note to your bug report mentioning the
outcome of your test.

Note: If you encounter any new bugs or upgrade bugs in the new
package, please don't post them to the debian BTS by now, since I
will try to fix as many as possible before I upload it to the debian
archives. Just send them to me with the subject line starting with
'[previewbug]'.

Joshua, sorry for the long time it took to do this bug research ... so
here is the ages old bug report for mozilla! Maybe you want to produce
some noise on it ;) ... but I guess that won't help much :(
