Hi,

It seems the package is currently limited to i386 only. However,
the source seems to have support fore more arches. Looking at
the source, I think the following arches are supported:
- m68k
- mips/mipsel
- hppa
- sparc
- alpha
- i386

It also seems to have a "C" variant. Would it be possible to
support the other arches with that?

None of the other architectures have worked for many years, and in
particular the compiler ports for those arches haven't been maintained
in a long time.

The "C" target never worked very well and only one person was able to
get it to work at all.

There _are_ plans for a new virtual machine that should easily port to
all arches. At present about 50% of the work has been done. With luck,
a lot more will be done this summer, but in any case it will be done
sometime in the not too distant future.

Taylor Campbell (Riastradh) says mit-scheme should now work under
amd64 (and other arches?) using the native backend. It'd be super if
this was enabled in debian/control so amd64 users could just do
"aptitude install mit-scheme".

Not quite accurate. There's now a working C back end that is portable
to all architectures. This will be a new package, "mit-scheme-c". The
main holdup at this point is that I need time to do the packaging.

Hi,

What is the status of amd64 port now ?

Hi,

I'm curious about mit-scheme on amd64's progress as well.

I've been able to install mit-scheme on amd64 by dowloading the i386 package
and installing with dpkg --force-architecture -i, though this is not ideal.

Knowing nothing about package maintenance, and armed with the very basic
TLDP howto (
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Debian-Binary-Package-Building-HOWTO/) and
not enough time, I managed to build mit-scheme on my amd64 system and make a
package that passes a lintian check. You can download it here
http://www.gmclean.org/mit-scheme_9.0.1-1_amd64.deb. Let me know if it
works, if I'm a complete putz, etc. Hope it helps some folks, works on my
amd64 machine.

Best wishes,

Review comment:

Hi,

In an effort to move all debian/copyright files to DEP-5 format I have attached a proposed replacement copyright file below. Please review this for correctness, in particular take a look at the full review details for the list of authors who are uncredited in the existing debian/copyright and make an assessment if they need to be mentioned.

Thanks!

Description:
 mit-scheme-dbg - MIT/GNU Scheme debugging files

mit-scheme-svm - MIT/GNU Scheme development environment (portable SVM build)
Changes:
 mit-scheme (12.1-6) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * Put developer-relevant info in debian/NOTES.md, leaving README.Debian
     for user-relevant info only.
   * New binary package mit-scheme-svm, which uses a virtual machine rather
than a native back end. Co-installable with the native build; both
Provides: mit-scheme-interpreter. Control with build profiles
     pkg.mit-scheme.nonative / pkg.mit-scheme.nosvm. A mapping from Debian
architecture to upstream back-end names, used in build options and
filenames, is in debian/rules. Which flavours can build on the current
arch comes from dh_listpackages, which isolates that information to
debian/control. (Note: scmutils, the only package depending on
mit-scheme, installs native .com files into the native flavour's
auxiliary directory, so it cannot use the -svm flavor.) Make
AUXDIR_NAME overridable, so the flavours can have separate aux
directories. Update mit-scheme alternative for multiple installed
flavors, with preference for native. Mark the self-referential build
dependency :native, and use $(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH) rather than a
     hardcoded triplet.
   * Decide --enable-cross-compiling by checking which compiled-code format
the build-time-available mit-scheme produces, rather than comparing
versions; otherwise building the SVM flavour with a native Scheme
fails with fasl-file-bad-data when saving lib/runtime.com.
   * Build for arm64, and, via the new SVM flavour, armhf, i386, and
     ppc64el (closes: #365530). Include ppc64el confshared.h patch. (Note:
armhf has a machine type but does not define HEAP_IN_LOW_MEMORY, so it
cannot load bands or FASL files built anywhere else, and therefore
     cannot be bootstrapped.)
   * Record what makes an SVM band portable across architectures in
     debian/NOTES.md.
   * Bootstrap from a prebuilt SVM library when present in debian/prebuilt/
and no mit-scheme is installed. (This can avoid the need to manually
seed new architectures. See debian/NOTES.md and git branch
debian-bootstrap. Note: debian/prebuilt/ not currently in source
package because it's an enormous binary blob.)
   * Override old-fsf-address-in-copyright-file (the Cambridge postal
address in debian/copyright is MIT's, which lintian mistakes for
     the FSF's old address.)
   * Install man page under the version-qualified name of real binary.
   * Record upstream bug tracker in debian/upstream/metadata.
   * Split dh_auto_* overrides into -arch and -indep, so architecture-only
builds no longer build the documentation. Move texlive,
texlive-plain-generic and ghostscript to Build-Depends-Indep: only
doc/ uses TeX, and that is now built only in the -indep sequence.
Keep texinfo because plugins under src/ run makeinfo.
