|       -D, --debug
|              enable debug
|
|       -V, --version
|              output version information and exit
|

It's customary that program:

a) provides primarily short option. Look ar cp(1), mv(1) etc.
b) if it provices long options, it should provide all long options.
c) The options are customary, not ambiguous.

The short options are primary. The GNU introduced long options for
readable alternatives.
