#407167 iceweasel: 'Getting Started' still links to *firefox* site on *mozilla* server

Hi!

I have tried the new iceweasel package with an empty ~/.mozilla
directory.

The browser has its default start homepage set to an empty page, not to
http://www.debian.org as changelog.Debian claims. This is - at least-
better than any mozilla related page but still not satisfying IMHO. Why
not set it to 'about:' or finally the Debian homepage?

However this bug is about the 'Getting Started' button in the menu bar -
maybe the first button a user clicks when trying out a new browser...
It links to a page on the mozilla server [1] telling me how to
'Getting Started with Firefox'. WTF!

Please do finally fix this. I have already reported this in #404649.

Thank you very much.

Cheers,
Fabian

I agree the default home page should be about:, like on iceape (which
also means it would be nice to add the same links that have been added
to the iceape about: page, too)

And how about changing the link (and icon!) of the 'Getting Started'
button to something Debian-related, too?

The 'Latest Headline' button next to the 'Getting Started' button is
also still connected to a mozilla-hosted news feed. How about connecting
this to something like Planet Debian...

Hmmm, where did I go wrong? How did you do it for iceape?

firefox because it's prettier, modified it a bit, and added 2 more
lines:
# Read the Debian README file for this package.
# See the Debian bug reports for this package.

I also needed to patch caps/src/nsScriptSecurityManager.cpp to allow
links from about: to file:/// urls. See bz#365526.

The last bit was to set the homepage to about:. I also had to add a
component that modifies the homepage if it happened to be the old
mozilla one (a file that doesn't exist anymore), but that's specific.

Planet Debian is fairly interesting to developers but doesn't really
have broad appeal. I'm open to suggestions on what we should replace
them with.

Ok, so how about the DWN? But they are more like monthly news at the
moment...

Or the DSA which are announced on the Debian homepage? But, well, they
might scare a user more than provide him any service...

I guess most interesting to the users could be the debian-news and
debian-announce lists, but they do not provide a rss-feed...

Any other (Debian-related; not locally restricted to e.g. USA news)
ideas?

Please note that Planet Debian has been patched into epiphany-browser
as a default bookmark in the latest revisions (epiphany-browser
2.14.3-5 and 2.16.2-2). I still think it's a good choice for the
'Latest Headlines' feed, because it contains lots of information about
what is currently going on in Debian from personal, more than technical,
points of view, IMHO. Again, the alternatives that spontaneously came to
my mind all disqualify in a way or another, see my last mail.

Nice greetings,
Fabian

Is there a security reason why they disallowed this?
