Hello.

In this report I'm being asked to add maildir support to pine by using
the patch from Eduardo Chappa. Needless to say, this would be much easier
if this patch was included in pine itself. However, as I see that
there exists the alpine project, I wonder: What are UW plans about pine?
Will it be replaced by alpine in a way that we should all forget about pine?

Since I am not now at nor have I ever been at UW, I cannot say what
their policy is going to be.  As an outsider looking in, it does appear
that pine will replaced by either the alpine command line client, its
associated web interface, or both.  I'd love to see a debian package of
it!

There is a debian package for alpine in testing and unstable, and
the same version is also in backports.org.

[ It does not have maildir support, but it seems they are working on it ].

The issue with maildir support is that there is NO implementation of
maildir for [al]pine that is:
  1) reliable and performs well
  2) completely/correctly supports IMAP semantics
  3) completely/correctly supports maildir semantics

Until such a thing exists, we will not distribute maildir support.  It
would be better if you had a separate maildir version of Pine, rather than
distributing only a version with a third-party version of maildir support,
because those maildir drivers often cause problems for non-maildir users
in various ways.  A non-trivial number of bug reports to us are resolved
by "get the unmodified UW version of Pine since the problem you are having
is caused by third-party mods."

As for your other question, the Alpine web page says that, to accomplish
our goals, we decided to "stop developing Pine (a registered trademark)
and start a new product - thus Alpine was born."  The Alpine source code
was originally Pine 5.00.

I've just closed three maildir-related bugs in pine. As alpine does
not have maildir, it does not have those bugs either.

This one is different in that it merely asks for maildir support,
hence the reassign and merge.
