Emacs's po-mode needs to be expanded as it's currently missing
critical functionality that competing packages, e.g. KBabel already
have. My personal pet peeve is that auto-fill isn't working properly
at the present.

There is, thankfully, upstream source that will address these issues,
and it has to be merged with the current Debian package. It can be
found here:

It includes numerous enhancements and improvements over the current
po-mode, and I suggest it be merged with the current code.
