Hi,

I've tried unstable and experimental versions, but the display goes to
sleep after starting up X, and I see nothing. I can enter username /
password in what is probably a gdm login screen, and I can hear disk
activity, so I assume it starts and it thinks it's running.

I can workaround by using "vesa" driver, so hardware seems to be functional.

Does it help if you disable DRI?
    Option "DRI" "off"
in the Device section should do the trick.

Hi,

Actually no.

I am suspecting more of it trying to output to something weird.

How can I run xrandr to debug this problem when I can't see the
display?

Do you have ssh access from another machine? If so, 'DISPLAY=:0 xrandr
...' should work (with 6.7.19x at least).

Also the log should tell you which modes are available and which one is
chosen by default. You can force another one with PreferredMode, see
http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10423.html

By the way, 6.7.192-4 is old, there's 6.7.194-1 now :)

Is this a laptop? What outputs does it actually have and which are in
use? It looks like it has a bogus connector table, or some sort of
weird connector. As such the driver is probably lighting up the wrong
output.

This is a desktop PC, hp dx5150MT. It has DVI-out and D-sub analogue
output; which DVI is connected to the display.

The connector table in your bios seems to be either broken or in some
currently unsupported format. The following option should get things
working for you:

Option "ConnectorTable" "X,2,1,4,Y,1,2,2"

where X and Y numbers between 1 and 5 and are not equal. X and Y
specify the ddc lines for each connector, so if you want to get an
edid from your monitor, you'll need to figure out what line the
connector uses.

It should 'just work' when you're logged in. If it doesn't, try stopping
the display manager and running something like

xinit $(which xrandr)

from ssh.

It's most likely an external DVI chip, so maybe Alex can quirk it if
you figure out the correct connector table.

Hello,

Did this bug has been resolved ?
Because I have the same problem : I have a Radeon XPRESS 200M Integraded
video card, and since a few weeks, I can't use the "ati" and "radeon"
xorg drivers with __recent kernels__.

It doesn't work with linux-image-2.6.22* whereas it works with
linux-image-2.6.18* (Debian kernels).

Hope it can help,

Probably not, DRI support for Xpress 200 seems to miss too much
specifications to get fixed so far.

Try disabling DRI. Option "DRI" "off" in section Device of xorg.conf
should do the trick.

2.6.22 contains some support for DRI for Xpress chips, while 2.6.18 did
not. So the X server might try to enable DRI on 2.6.22. If this DRI is
actually not well supported, enabling it might break things...

Hi,

I tried all possible cases with

for A in 1 2 3 4 5; do for B in 1 2 3 4 5; do sed "s/ConnectorTable\" .*/ConnectorTable\" \"$A,2,1,4,$B,1,2,2\"/" < /etc/X11/xorg.conf-template20071008 > /etc/X11/xorg.conf ; X; cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.log.$A.$B; done ; done

and they all faied to start. I don't quite understand what this
ConnectorTable option should do and I don't quite understand what is
really wrong with this setup.

For whatever reason DDC tends to be unreliable on XPRESS chips. I
think it may be a clock issue. Without DDC, the server is not able to
find any modes for the output. you'll have to add a monitor section
and link it with the output in question. see this page for more:
http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html
then add modelines for your monitor
something like:

Section "Device"
Identifier	"ATI Technologies Inc RS480 [Radeon Xpress 200G Series]"
	Driver "radeon"
	Option "DRI" "false"

	Option "ConnectorTable" "5,2,1,4,5,1,2,2"
        Option "monitor-DVI-0" "Generic Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"

please try again with the connectortable option and monitor changes I
suggested. your log shows that you are using the bios tables rather
than the connector table specified in the config.

Thanks,

Hello,

I tried latest git checkout (Debian repository) from experimental branch
and got this working. Previously I'd all the same symptons as has been
described in this bug report.

However I still had to put ConnectorTable to my xorg.conf, without it
the driver didn't work. I used these settings:

	Option "DRI" "off"
	Option "ConnectorTable" "4,2,1,4,1,1,2,2"

I've MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard.

And I compiled the driver by myself using following commands:

git clone git://git.debian.org/git/pkg-xorg/driver/xserver-xorg-video-ati.git
cd xserver-xorg-video-ati/
git checkout -b master origin/debian-experimental
dch -i
sudo pdebuild

I don't know how to use git, so to specify exact version I sued, the
latest log entry is:

commit d832096cd70b61f29f5b790092f394c38091abc5

Thanks. These instructions worked for me too :). I don't need to turn
off DRI or set the ConnectorTable. Indeed, I can completely remove
xorg.conf. I have attached my Xorg.0.log.

Hi,
a) Only vesa is supported with this chipset with actual debian packages.
b) since 2 years I'm trying to get a usuable fglrx driver
   see http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=253
c) Only git versions of radeon drivers seems to work in 2D,
    no DRI nor OpenGl support
   -> http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building

DRI not supported cause different Memory Model.

Hi,

Finally got back home to get some time to go face-to-face with this
machine.

with this version, things get much further without tweaking anything:

ii xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.197-1 X.Org X server -- ATI display driver

The minimal configuration option I needed to add was 'ConnectorTable'.

The current pain point is that gdm login screen starts up with :

(II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-0 using initial mode 1280x768

which I don't quite understand why. Logging into GNOME, GNOME changes
the display configuration to 1280x1024, which feels pretty comfortable

What happens if you don't pass this option? Do you have the

Note that even if 6.7.197 is in unstable now, I try to keep uploading
newer upstream snapshots into experimental once a week or so (there are
still of lots of improvements being made by the devs).

What monitor(s) do you have attached to which output(s)? What does
xrandr report? It could just be that your monitor report this 1280x768
as a preferred mode.

You can override this default mode using ModeLine and PreferredMode in
the corresponding Monitor section in xorg.conf, see section III and
especially III.5 of http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12

Hi,

This was fixed when I booted my machine this morning. I guess this
was interim problem due to me doing partial upgrades; after a full
dist-upgrade problem doesn't seem to happen.

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1600 x 1200
DVI-0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.0 + 60.0
   1600x1200 59.9
   1400x1050 60.0
   1280x1024 59.9*
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 60.0
VGA-0 unknown connection (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1280x800 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9

My monitor is connected to DVI-0, and a projector (which is currently
turned off) is connected to VGA-0.

The remaining problem was that with GDM I can see the display, but
after logging into GNOME when ConnectorCable is not set, display goes
blank; and I think I now understand why.

I extract the most interesting part of the log. My theory is that the
GNOME session tries to reconfigure xrandr such that it outputs to Port
0, which is 'DVI-0' when ConnectorCable is set, and 'VGA-0' when it's
not set, and because xrandr doesn't quite know when VGA-0 is connected
or not, GNOME is able to set VGA-0 as the only output.

Not quite sure if this is fixable.

That looks more reasonable.

gnome session seems to save arbitrary xrandr setups and I'm not sure
how or when it does it. I think there is a file you can delete that
will leave the xserver as configured at start up. Perhaps Brice
knows?

Yes, the GNOME session does indeed some RandR setup based on the
configured display properties, but only if the user has set them in
gnome-display-properties. I think it only tries to change the resolution
and refresh rate of the screen, and it doesn’t get the data through
RandR 1.2.

To delete this configuration, you can run:
  gconftool --recursive-unset /desktop/gnome/screen

I finally got a chance to play around with multihead on Xpress 200 based

Debian Sid/Experimental.

I was trying to get S-video output to work with KMS, but failed. TV
screen remains largely empty and black, but with slight noise here and
there. In other words, no luck.

When I switched to UMS, I was able to get S-video output working after I
disabled and enabled it for the second time. I got garbled screen the
first time. Other than that, it does seem to work just fine. Just
finished watching a movie, and noticed no problems with the picture.

I currently do not have a way to test VGA output.
