when network is already configured in the kernel/initramfs, the / is
mounted from network, and dhclient is started to run the appopriate
setup scripts it pauses for a very long time.

Skipping dhclient is not really an option as it is necessary to run the
appropriate networking startup scripts on the system.

Dhclient locks up because it runs scripts from dhclient-enter-hooks.d
(such as the script from samba-common) while the network is down. These
scripts read and write the filesystem that is inaccessible thanks to
dhclient, and it takes a long time before all the timeouts pass.

Moving the script to dhclient-exit-hooks.d solves the problem. However,
many packages appear to install scripts there.


Suggestions:

1) do not down the network, ever, unless the lease is revoked

2) do not run arbitrary scripts while the network is down

This is a duplicate of some other bug I cannot find.

Anyway, it should be fixed on platforms where dhclient switched from
using ifconfig to using ip when it is uploaded (linux) and remain broken
on others (hurd, kfreebsd ?).
