I recently used d-i to install Debian Etch to a volume that was part of an LVM volume group that contained an active snapshot volume. While the installation proceeded fine, it issued an error message to the effect that something was wrong with the partition table (can't recall the exact message). This should be fixed for future d-i releases...
Quoting Tim Hull (thully@umich.edu): If you can't remember the message, spotting the exact place the bug lies will be tricky, I'm afraid. We also need to know what exact version of D-I you were using. Was it a standard Debian Etch CD? Are you in position to reproduce this bug (say, with a daily build)? If not, spotting the bug will be *very* tricky.
"Tim Hull" <thully@umich.edu> writes: Can you check your installed system on /var/log/installer/ and see if the error message is avaiable there? In case you find it, you can send the logfile, bziped, to the bug report.
The message states: Unable to determine geometry of file/device. You should not use Parted unless you REALLY know what you're doing! The log is attached...
On the other hand, perhaps it doesn't happen very often to install Debian (or any other distro) on a LVM with active snapshots. If this bug isn't easy to fix (because d-i depends on parted, which doesn't understand snapshots? - that's just my guess), at least the installer should give a more meaningful warning message. reassign 437013 partman-lvm clone 437013 -1 reassign -1 libparted1.7-1 1.7.1-5.1 retitle -1 [D-I] Returns error "Unable to determine geometry of file/device" for LVM group with active snapshot volumes block 437013 with -1 tags -1 d-i thanks As is often the case in open source development, we'll need someone who is motivated enough to research and address the issue for that to happen. I can at least reassign the report to the proper components though. Cheers, FJP
