Something somewhere happened such that the
Inbox->Properties->Retention Policy->Always delete read messages
checkbox was ticked, the effects of which seem to be related to
http://madduck.net/blog/2008.06.20:preventing-mail-loss-due-to-braindead-imap-clients/

I've stopped wondering whenever Mozilla products randomly change
their own settings, so this bug report is about something else:

In trying to reproduce the problem, I ticked the box, turned on IMAP
debugging as per http://wiki.dovecot.org/Debugging/Thunderbird and
had a go. No matter what I tried, entering and leaving the inbox,
shutting down and restarting the client, read messages would *not*
get deleted. Sure enough, the radio button above says never to
delete any messages, and it would make sense if that took priority
(and the checkbox properly greyed out), but then I can't explain why
everytime I use Thunderbird, I lose the read messages in my inbox,
and no other folder.

So I can't even really reproduce, but this problem has been with me
for almost 2 years and it's about time I filed this bug report.

Hello Martin,

the last four years nothing rellay happend to this bug. Do you still
have such problems as you have discribed?

For me, I can't reproduce this behavior over all the time and the last
years. So I hope this problems have gone over the last years. If so,
this bug could be closed, if not ... mhh difficult.
