Since my upgrade from 1.6 to 1.7, john now ignores /var/lib/john. It's
writing john.pot and john.rec (which appears to be a renamed restore)
in /root/.john instead.

Any thoughts on that?

Hi Ruben,

in 2011, you tagged a few bugs without shedding a single word of
explanation. I have come around this with #495398, filed 2008, which
raises an, IMO valid, question, ending in an "Any thoughts on that"
question.

Three years later, you simple slapped a "wontfix" tag on the issue.

I find that just a little bit rude. Can you please explain why you don't
intend to fix that?
