When the DPMS blanks the LCD, the backlight remains on (ie, the screen
goes dark, but the backlight remains on). The same is true running xset
directly (xset dpms force off). (I believe the LCD drivers FETs are being
completely switched off, because eventually the pixels fade and let the
backlight bleed through, so at least the DPMS is doing something).

The backlight can be turned off successfully using the BIOS (vbetool
dpms off), and using the Fn-F1 hotkey.

The machine is a Toshiba Portege 3490CT. The DPMS has never worked
properly (I had previously noticed this issue under both Woody and Etch).

This issue also occurs on a Toshiba Satellite A110 with Intel 945
graphics, both using the i810 and the intel driver.

Using latest xorg from Lenny, but running MEPIS 2.6.27 kernel.

I am sorry, my message can be disregarded. Turns out the KDE screensaver was
set to Blank Screen in 60 minutes. It somehow interferes with the X DPMS
control. Disabling the screensaver makes the backlight turn off properly.

I can not reproduce this. Is this still an issue for you?
