Hi William,
the problem is in libsd not in KVM. This is from the release notes at:

http://www.libsdl.org/release/changes-1.2.html

|* The screensaver and DPMS monitor blanking are disabled while SDL games
|  are running under the X11 and DGA video drivers. This behavior will be
|  formalized and selectable in SDL 1.3.

You can use the -vnc option so kvm doesn't use sdl at all to work around
this.
