Hello,

thanks for maintaining pidgin.

Recently, the icon that notifies in the system tray that there are
unread messages has changed. Originally it was some neutral geometric
shape, and now it's a smiley face.

It has happened to me several times already to click on the smiley face
and to find a message that was not fun at all. Having messages in
important but annoying and demanding conversations highlighted using
smileys can prove to be extremely irritating.

I'm sure the original authors did not intend to have fun of people who
are not having fun conversations, but that can end up being the result
of the icon change: I would strongly encourage going back to something
neutral.

Ciao,

Enrico

Icons have not changed upstream. Have you switched GTK/GNOME/pidgin
themes recently?

Assuming this is a user theme issue since there's been no response.

Not really, no. I've upgraded from lenny to squeeze, I don't know if
that brought in some icon changes.

I went browsing all icons in pidgin-data, and in fact I found the
'incriminated' icon there:
/usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/22/tray-new-im.png
I don't know when it changed, but it used to be something more like
/usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/22/tray-message.png a month or so ago.

Definitely something like tray-message.png would be more appropriate.
Now that I've found it I can of course fix it myself by doing "cp
tray-message.png tray-new-im.png" (and I've done so), but the point of a
bug report was to show cases where that icon is not really appropriate.

That was in a hurry, I was rather disappointed.

Anyway, icon design is subjective, so I'll leave it to your judgement to
decide whether it's an issue you care about or not.

Ciao,

Enrico
