When I try to open remote image via "open location" dialog, it prints out this message (no matter what image i'm trying to open):

Opening 'http://www.debian.org/Pics/debian.png' failed:
Could not open 'http://www.debian.org/Pics/debian.png' for reading: No such file or directory

When I used gnome couple of months ago it worked just fine. Now I'm using KDE 4.2.* from experimental repositories. I also tried to instal bunch of gnome
libraries and other stuff like gvfs, but it still doesn't work. Am I missing something?

If you'd like to be able to open files remotely (like over HTTP or
FTP), install the gvfs-backends package.

Do you have dbus and hal installed? Does anything get printed to the
console while running gimp & trying to open a URL?

Yes, I do have dbus (as well as many of libdbus-* libraries) and hal installed. No, gimp & doesn't print anything to the console, while trying to open an url.

Dear Maintainer,

I, too, get

Opening 'https://www.debian.org/Pics/debian.png' failed:

Could not open 'https://www.debian.org/Pics/debian.png' for reading: No
such file or directory

This is a recent install of jessie. I have dbus but not hal:

No candidate version found for hal

I installed gvfs-backends as instructed by
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/gimp

Thanks, Bernhard

Hi,

This has also been reported in Ubuntu. Installing gvfs-backends worked
for that person (Kubuntu 17.04).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+bug/1720582

"Open from Location" seems to be pretty core functionality to me. Would
it be possible to move gvfs-backends to "Depends" instead of "Suggests".
Or at least to "Recommends".

Regards,

Ross
