Menu>System/Package_Source I select a debian mirror Updating the list I get the message ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/updates/main/source/Sources: Unable to fetch file, server said '/debian/dists/lenny/updates/main/source/Sources: No such file or directory ' ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/updates/contrib/source/Sources: Unable to fetch file, server said '/debian/dists/lenny/updates/contrib/source/Sources: No such file or directory ' ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/updates/non-free/source/Sources: Unable to fetch file, server said '/debian/dists/lenny/updates/non-free/source/Sources: No such file or directory ' These file Sources exist only with the ending .gz as Sources.gz
Hi Christoph, Which program is this in? apt-get itself is command-line only. The "updates" directory is only on security.debian.org, so the first problem is in program that's setting up the list of locations to download from. Regards, Steve

Hi Steve, That is a quick answer! Many thanks! I used the XFCE4 popup menu to start /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/software-properties-gtk I chose the "Main server" I checked all checkboxes The program created the following -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- christo:~# more /etc/apt/sources.list # # deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.0 _Lenny_ - Official i386 NETINST Binary-1 20090214-16:03]/ lenny main # deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.0 _Lenny_ - Official i386 NETINST Binary-1 20090214-16:03]/ lenny main deb http://debian.charite.de/debian/ lenny main deb-src http://debian.charite.de/debian/ lenny main deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free deb-src http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I tried 2 different servers - the same result. Looking into the remote directory trees there is not a file Sources but a file Sources.gz. Sorry - I am new to Debian. I come from Gentoo which is easier to use and has simplier concepts but which has the disadvantage that installation takes ages. Therefore I decided to give Debian a try. In the meantime I found out how to download the package with wget and how to build the package with dpkg-source -x .dsc and debian/rules build. So for the moment my problem is solved, but I thought that this might be a general problem which I should submit. Best regards and thanks for your prompt answer Christoph
reassign 525409 software-properties-gtk thanks Hi Christoph, Gustavo, Looks like a problem in software-properties-gtk. That is a slight confusing error message. Although the message only mentions the non-compressed URL, it tries (in order) .bz2 , .gz , (no extension). Thank you, it's good to report bugs like this. Regards, Steve
Use the sources.list.bak attached as your /etc/apt/sources.list . In Gnome, go to System | Administration | Software Sources | Debian Software | Download from:. Choose the server http://bazaar.cites.uiuc.edu/pub/debian/ . After that try to close the application, and you will be asked to update the package list. Then you will get an error like the one mentioned above and you the resulting sources.list will be the one attached. HTH.
