When you are suspending to disk, are an option to get back to desktop, if
you cancel the hibernation and back, the system hangs and nothing happens...
No hibernation, no back.

Are you by any chance using a Radeon graphics card?

For me doing the susped to disk dance and then not powering off locks up
the card. The sdriver cannot initialize the card when it is not in the
default state. Unless you happen to own the exact same card a Radeon
driver developer owns. Those reportedly all work.
