When hostapd is started on a wireless interface with IPv6 configuration, it destroys this configuration. For example, I have the following stanzas in my /etc/network/interfaces:
auto ath0
iface ath0 inet static
address 192.168.2.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.2.255
iface ath0 inet6 static
address 2001:1938:147:2::1
netmask 64
And the following hostapd.conf:
interface=ath0
driver=madwifi
ssid=myssid
auth_algs=3
wpa=3
wpa_passphrase=mypassphrase
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
If I bring up the interface without starting hostapd, it has the assigned global IPv6 address, and the correct routes show up in the routing table. After starting hostapd, however, these disappear, and only the link-local configuration remains.
The IPv4 configuration is, of course, preserved, so I'm not sure what's happening here.
I can confirm this behaviour. As soon as hostapd is started, the IPv6 address of the interface is lost. strace does not reveal anything obvious to me. Any hints on debugging it would be appreciated. I am using driver=nl80211, btw, so it does not seem to be driver-related.
Hi all,
while reviving the ALLNET ALL0271 card with kernel SoftMAC driver p54pci (instead of FullMAC prism54) in my router (lenny + lenny-backports + squeeze hostapd), I experienced the same.
Even worse: After stopping hostapd (invoke-rc.d hostapd stop), the IPv6 link-layer local address vanished, too.
An strace(1) of hostapd revealed nothing useful. Therefore, I suspect that the IPv6 configuration gets withdrawn by the kernel nl80211/mac80211 stack or the p54 driver modules while enabling/disabling mon.wlan0.
(1) I use the most recent (2.13.25.0) ISL3886 PCI SoftMAC firmware:

Oops, link-layer local address gone, too!
Do you need more information to investigate this issue?
Just my two cents,
Karl
Hi all,
while reviving the ALLNET ALL0271 card with kernel SoftMAC driver p54pci (instead of FullMAC prism54) in my router (lenny + lenny-backports + squeeze hostapd), I experienced the same.

Do you need more information to investigate this issue?
Just my two cents,
Karl
I also have this issue. Easy workaround for it that works at least on
wheezy:
1. Disable autostart of hostapd via init script
$ grep DAEMON_CONF /etc/default/hostapd
# Uncomment and set DAEMON_CONF to the absolute path of a hostapd configuration
#DAEMON_CONF=""
2. Edit interfaces file as follow:
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
hostapd /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
iface wlan0 inet6 static
address xxxx:xxxx:xxx:x::x
netmask 64
