I tried to take a screenshot using these commands:

import test.png (and drawing a frame)
import -window root test2.png

No errors shown, but the resulting png's show an all black
picture. Drawing a frame with the mouse results in a black
picture the size of the frame.

If you need any more information, I would love to help ...

After upgrading X and kde it works like a charm. Could you retest. if it does
not work could you please:
Post your windowing system (e.g. gnome), your ImageMagick release level (do
not know if you have upgraded), and the output of this command: xdpyinfo.
