finch depends on libgstfarsight0.10-0, which depends on
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, which depends on gconf2, libx11-6, libxdamage1 etc.
Personally I don't mind having an X installation on a headless ssh-only machine
(hard disk space is cheap). But the dependencies IMHO contradict the point
that finch is a console IM client.

I would like to raise this bug again. It is possible to compile finch
with out the requirement for X server etc libraries, I believe the
important config flag is --disable-gtkui.

Is there any chance this could be changed for finch?

I am a novice at packaging, but I'm prepared to dig deeper into this
problem if required.

Thanks,
Dean

The finch package does not depend directly on any X packages. It
depends on gstreamer for VoIP support, which is linked into the main
finch binary. To remove that dependency, gstreamer support would have
to be removed entirely from both finch and libpurple, and I am not
thrilled with the idea of having two separate libpurple packages.
There is a bug open upstream to try to rectify the situation, but I
expect it won't go anywhere unless someone else writes a patch.

Apologies for my earlier misunderstanding of the problem.

I have read the bug ticket on pidgin.im and there doesn't seem to be
any interest in moving the voice/video parts out of libpurple.

I'm wondering what the potential issues of having a separate libpurple
for finch (libpurple-finch?) would be?

Thanks,
Dean
