Unless launched as root, pppoeconf tries obtaining root privileges via gksu, sudo or su-to-root (from the menu package). This would be OK since pppoeconf is in /usr/sbin/, except a menu item always displayed offers to launch and will fails if none of menu, sudo and gksu is installed, opening a console which prints Privilèges du superutilisateur indispensables Veuillez valider pour continuer... In English, that would be $ LANG=C /usr/sbin/pppoeconf Please become root before running pppoeconf! Press return to continue... This is a follow-up for #548231, where I incorrectly assumed that the menu item would only work for the root user. Thank you for adding gksu support, but I personally use kdesu.

I don't know if I stand by my description of the problem. Although a menu item which can fail is bad, it could not be a bug. It has to fail clearly though. Avoid exclamation marks, and indicate clearly that there was an error. "Press return to continue..." is misleading, suggesting something will happen after pressing return. You could also look at synaptic if you wish to prevent this error via dependencies, as I wrote. Clearly, Debian has no good way to deal with this issue.
