Gajim will correctly detect when I've become idle, and set me
auto-away as configured.  However, it often (though not always) fails
to detect when I have returned, and leaves me marked auto-away due to
idle even after I've returned and have been actively using the
computer.  This behavior has existed across several recent versions
and on several different machines.

Note, by the way, that all the Gajim settings pertaining to integration
with netwokr-manager are enabled, and that still isn't helping (even
though I do use n-m)

I have Gajim set to mark me away after 5 minutes and not available after
6 minutes.

Strangely, even after an hour, it marked two of my accounts away (not
not available).  One remained available.  After unlocking the
screensaver on the machine, all three accounts were left in the same state.
