This is xrandr output:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1200 x 1600, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1280x1024      60.0 +
   1280x960       60.0
   1024x768       75.1     70.1     60.0
   800x600        72.2     75.0     60.3
   640x480        72.8     75.0     60.0
   720x400        70.1
DVI-D-1 connected 1200x1600+0+0 left (normal left inverted right x axis
y axis) 408mm x 306mm
   1600x1200      60.0*+
   1280x1024      60.0
   1024x768       60.0
   800x600        60.3
   640x480        60.0
   720x400        70.1
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The VGA-1 screen is turned off. Whenever I turn it on xmonad moves my
running application the the VGA screen.

The workaround is probably to start X with the VGA screen disconnected.

This should be also possible to fix with

xrandr --primary DVI-D-1

which should make windows jump to this screen when it is turned on, or
not jump at all when it is always on and only the other screen is
turned off.

Still an option for not jumping at all might be perhaps useful.

Hi xmonad list,

there are a few bugreports against the xmonad package which I can not
comment myself, because I don’t have a xrandr-setup here. I’m thus
forwarding you the message, in hope that you can help Michal. Please
