after yesterday's dist-upgrade (it had probably been a few weeks since
the previous one) when I resume from suspend I get a black screen with
a couple visual artifacts (thin horizontal scanlines or something). if
i ctrl-alt-f7 i get back to the desktop just fine, so nothing has crashed.

is there something that's supposed to be in /etc/pm that fixes this? i
have no files in any of those subdirectories.

following up,

it seems that this behavior doesn't occur 100% of the time, somewhat
non-deterministically it sometimes correctly changes the vt to 7.

Hello,

I have similar issue with Compal JFL92 (GeForce 8600M GT). I can "fix"
this issue for this computer by
modifying /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/98video-quirk-db-handler:

	elif using_nvidia; then
            # Ditto for nVidia binary drivers
            remove_parameters $possible_video_quirks
        elif using_fglrx; then
-->
        elif using_nvidia; then
            # Ditto for nVidia binary drivers
            add_parameters --quirk-no-chvt
            remove_parameters $possible_video_quirks
        elif using_fglrx; then

I added line "add_parameters --quirk-no-chvt" . It seems that this line
was removed from pm-utils some time ago as stated
