#576240 say what ITP means right there in the report

Gentlemen, nowhere in e.g.,
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=576184
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.general/150675/raw
does it say what ITP stands for. That it probably stands for Intent to
Package should be mentioned there in the text rather than hoping the
newer user will search for the list of abbreviations. Same problem with the
other WNPP items.

reassign 576240 wnpp
thanks

The BTS itself has little to do with the standards used for filing
WNPP bugs.

It's possible that this is a subset of a request to provide
information on a source package basis, perhaps through WAT or UDD or
something similar, but as of yet, no such solution exists.

reassign 576240 qa.debian.org
thanks

bugs.debian.org was not the proper package but wnpp is not either,
reassigning the bug to qa.debian.org.
Jidanni is a bit vague in her bug report so unless she gives a better idea
of what the problem is, i would suggest just closing the bug report.
I consider the link in the bottom of the pages to the BTS help page
enought explanation.

I challenge you to show how a non Debian insider will go from some ITP bug
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=...
to the web page that contains the answer for what ITP means, without
throwing up his hands and doing
http://www.google.com/search?q=site:bugs.debian.org+ITP
which won't get him far. He needs to use
http://www.google.com/search?q=site:bugs.debian.org+ITP+%22Intent+to+package%22
but of course he doesn't know that.

Since you insist in using google...

http://www.google.com/search?q=debian+ITP

First link! It is even highlighted in the short text google shows.

Well, OK, I hope the Google result doesn't somehow point to something
different someday. All I can offer is http://www.useit.com/alertbox/ as
a tip for making clear websites.

FWIW:

1. If the BTS is going to be modified to display some alt text, then the bug
should be reassigned to debbugs.

2. The wnpp BTS page already displays the complete text of each abbreviation.
(not sure if it is possible to for example remove the "Outstanding bugs" part,
@owner?)

Holger Levsen <holger@layer-acht.org> (08/04/2010):

Like by typing “ITP” in the “search” box on http://www.debian.org/
which leads to http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/index.*.html pages?
That makes me think we're performing quite good here.

One might object that Accepted-Languages might get higher priority or
might even be used to limit the results. But that's another topic.

Hi,

If I look at the results at http://search.debian.org/?q=itp I roll my eyes and
go away, sorry. As much as I'm impressed^wsurprised the search does something
again, I'm totally unimpressed by those search results.

From looking at the summaries at http://search.debian.org/?q=itp one could
believe that "ITP" is about selecting a server close to Australia Austria
Bulgaria Germany Hong Kong Indonesia... ;-)

yeah.

cheers,
Holger, who is impressed by people pointing out something "is there" when
apperarantly people have problems locating that information. To me it seems
that this information is presented poorly, not that those people searching
are doing something wrong.

This is one of the problems with volunteer-driven projects IME. There is
little to motivate people to fix fiddly usability issues and it's much
easier to give a 'jobsworth' response. I used to think this was
deliberate, in order to create a bar (i.e. people who can't be bothered
to search for terms shouldn't be getting involved in wnpp issues),
personally I find this a bit 'sniffy'.

Hi,

A low cost solution could be to modify reportbug to produce the sentence "I
intend to package this software".
