I have the "Use the same fonts as other applications" unset and my choice of "Standard font" and "Fixed
width font" set to my preferences which are different from the standard fonts.  However the font used to
render messages is still the standard fixed width font.  The chosen fonts are present as they are used in
the standard font set and elsewhere, and that is all working.

This all works as required on Ubuntu Lucid which has Evolution 2.28.3, just not on Debian Testing with
Evolution 2.30.1.2.

Hmhm, and does it follow what is configured in GNOME/gconf settings or
is there a third source?

What I was asking (but it wasn't very clear I have to admit) is if
Evolution fonts were changing when you changed them in the GNOME
settings. From what you said above, it seems so?

I'm not sure what the question is asking (almost certainly my fault for
not understanding), but I checked with the configuration editor and the
app/evolution/mail/display/fonts properties monospace and variable are
correct and use_custom is selected.  The fonts used by Evolution are the
ones specified in the "Appearance Preferences".  As far as I can tell no
other fonts are involved.

Thanks, I now appreciate what you were asking -- I think :-)

If I change the font in the GNOME Appearance Preferences then if I
restart Evolution I get the new font.  There is no immediate change as
with other applications, I have to stop and restart.  But yes the fonts
used are exactly those specified in the GNOME dialogue even though the
Evolution preferences indicate there should be an override.
